New Delhi (India), April 14, 2023: Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi’s political journey has taken a surprising turn as he has joined the Congress party ahead of assembly polls. This comes after Savadi announced his resignation from the BJP following the denial of a ticket to contest in the upcoming Assembly elections on May 10.
Savadi’s decision to join the opposition party was made official after a meeting with Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah, and Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Shivakumar stated that Savadi, a BJP MLC, had agreed to become a member of their Congress family on his own accord. The BJP had denied Savadi’s request to contest from the Athani seat in the Belagavi district, which he had won three times in the past. Instead, the seat was given to sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli.
Kumathalli, who was previously in the Congress, was among the group of defectors who helped the BJP form its government under the leadership of B.S. Yediyurappa in 2019.
Savadi is expected to tender his resignation from the Upper House to Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti this afternoon. Following this, he will be officially joining the Congress Party.
With the upcoming elections just around the corner, this political development could impact the dynamics of the election in the state of Karnataka.
