New Delhi (India), April 29, 2023: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra extended her support to a group of wrestlers who have been protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding action against the alleged sexual exploitation of women athletes. The athletes have been sitting in protest, seeking the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaints of sexual harassment.
During her visit to the protest venue, the Congress general secretary criticized the Delhi Police for not providing a copy of the First Information Report (FIR) filed against Singh. Gandhi Vadra called for Singh’s ouster from the post, citing serious allegations against him and the potential to destroy the wrestlers’ careers. She called on the government to take immediate action against Singh to ensure justice for the athletes.
The Delhi Police has filed two cases against Singh, including one under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, in response to the wrestlers’ complaints. Despite police assurances of action, the wrestlers have continued their sit-in protest, demanding the “immediate arrest” of the WFI chief. Gandhi Vadra has been vocal in her support of the athletes and their fight for justice, criticizing the government’s apparent indifference to their appeals.
Gandhi Vadra’s visit to the protest venue further galvanized the athletes’ movement and added political pressure on the government to take decisive action against Singh. The Congress leader has been a vocal advocate for the athletes’ cause, urging the government to listen to their appeals and take swift action against those responsible for their suffering.
With the wrestlers showing no signs of backing down, the pressure on the government and WFI chief Singh is only set to increase in the coming days.
