Convicted: Jailed Gangster-Politician Mukhtar Ansari Sentenced to Ten Years in Murder Case

New Delhi (India), April 29, 2023: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who is currently imprisoned, has been convicted in a kidnapping and murder case of Bharatiya Janata MLA Krishnanand Rai by the Ghazipur’s MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh.
The court has sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment and has imposed a fine of Rs. 5 lakh on Ansari. The verdict on Ansari’s elder brother and BSP MP Afzal Ansari, who is also accused in the case, is yet to be announced.
The murder of Rai, which took place in Ghazipur in 2005 allegedly by Ansari and Afzal Ansari, had created a huge uproar. In response to the court’s verdict, Rai’s wife, Alka Rai, expressed her faith in the judiciary and stated that the rule of mafias and goondas has come to an end in the state.
This decision by the court will be seen as a major victory for law enforcement agencies and a significant setback for the criminal underworld.
Ansari has been convicted in multiple cases related to murder and attempt to murder, including the murder of a constable and the attack on an additional SP of Ghazipur, among others. The Allahabad high court has also convicted and sentenced him in other cases, such as threatening a jailer and pointing a pistol at him in 2003 and a 1999 case under the Gangster Act.
