New Delhi (India), May 2, 2023: The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has issued an apology after sharing a tweet that depicted a distorted image of the Hindu goddess Kali in a blast scene, triggering outrage on social media.

Emine Dzhaparova, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister, expressed regret over the “distorted” depiction of the goddess and stated that the country “respects unique Indian culture and highly appreciates the support from India.” She also confirmed that the image had been removed.

The tweet, which was posted on April 30, featured an improvised picture by Ukrainian artist Maksym Palenko, showing the face and details of the blast resembling the Hindu goddess Kali blended with the iconic flying skirt pose of American actress Marilyn Monroe. The post drew significant backlash, with Twitter users accusing the ministry of Hinduphobia and requesting an immediate apology.

Dzhaporava’s apology comes after her recent visit to India, which marked the first visit by a Ukrainian minister to India since the start of the Ukraine war in February last year. During her visit, she held talks with Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi, signifying the desire to further increase cooperation in a spirit of mutual respect and friendship.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s tweet depicting the distorted image of the Hindu goddess Kali has caused a stir on social media, with the deputy foreign minister issuing an apology for the “regrettable” portrayal.
