New Delhi (India), May 3, 2023: Indian boxing superstar MC Mary Kom has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene in the worsening law and order situation in her home state of Manipur.
She expressed concern over the violence that has erupted in the northeastern state and urged the government to take action. “My state Manipur is burning, kindly help,” she wrote on Twitter, tagging the two leaders.
On Wednesday, the Manipur government imposed a curfew in eight districts and suspended mobile internet services in the entire state following violence during a tribal agitation. The clashes broke out after thousands of people turned up at a “Tribal Solidarity March” called by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Indian Army has deployed its forces in all violence-hit areas in the state and is taking action to evacuate people to safer areas and restore law and order.
The Army responded to the request of the Civil Administration in Manipur and immediately deployed an adequate number of columns for area dominance in all affected areas on the evening of May 3. “Actions to evacuate the maximum number of people to safer areas and restore law and order are underway,” the Army said in a statement. Rallies were held in Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kangpokpi, Noney, and Ukhru by protesters, defying prohibitory orders.
In response to the worsening situation, the Manipur government issued an order to stop the spread of misinformation and false rumors through various social platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter on the phone.
