Mumbai (India), 6th May 2023: Jairam Ramesh, Congress’ General Secretary of Communications, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a massive roadshow in Bengaluru, calling him “the master of distortion”.

In his tweet, Ramesh sarcastically referred to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claims that Modi is being “targeted” by Congress in the ongoing poll-bound Karnataka state election. Ramesh went on to accuse the Prime Minister of spreading “prejudice and bigotry” in his scheduled rally later in the day.

The Congress leader highlighted several issues, including allegations of Karnataka ministers and government officials demanding a 40 percent “commission” to grant projects, the rising cost of living, unemployment, and the dire state of Bengaluru’s infrastructure.

Ramesh also criticized Modi’s 40-kilometer, two-day roadshow, which he said caused chaos and uncertainty for students writing crucial exams and led to the felling of several trees.

Both the Congress and BJP have been trading insults and accusations in the run-up to the election, with the former claiming to have audio evidence of a plot to assassinate party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and his family. The Congress has accused a BJP MP of orchestrating the plot, which the BJP has yet to respond to. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has warned both parties against using inappropriate vocabulary and language.

The Karnataka election, along with those in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, is seen as a significant test for the BJP’s bid to win a third consecutive Lok Sabha election next year. With just a few days to go before the vote, the election rhetoric and accusations show no signs of slowing down.
