New Delhi (India), May 7, 2023: In a significant breakthrough, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered a massive liquor trade scam in Chhattisgarh, naming senior IAS officer Anil Tuteja as the alleged kingpin of an illegal liquor syndicate. The ED’s investigation revealed that an estimated 30–40% of the state’s liquor sales from 2019 to 2022 involved unaccounted illicit liquor.

The syndicate, consisting of high-ranking government officials, private individuals, and political executives, is believed to have generated over Rs. 2,000 crore in corruption money.

The ED’s application to a special court in Raipur sought the remand of liquor businessman Anwar Dhebar, the alleged partner of Tuteja in the illegal liquor trade. Anwar, the elder brother of Congress leader and Raipur Mayor Aijaz Dhebar, was arrested on Saturday by the ED.

Digital evidence reportedly shows transactions of Rs. 14.41 crore between Anwar and Tuteja. The syndicate allegedly collected illegal money through various means, including charging commissions from liquor suppliers, selling off-the-record country liquor, and accepting annual commissions from distillers.

The investigation has unveiled a sinister scheme involving the manufacture and sale of unaccounted illicit liquor. The entire operation was conducted off the books, with no income tax or excise duty paid. The ED claimed that a significant portion of the proceeds was shared with politicians, as directed by the highest political executives of the state.

The ED’s probe further revealed that this illegal sale accounted for a staggering 30–40% of the total liquor sales in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2022.

As the investigation continues, the ED aims to expose the extent of corruption in the excise department and bring all those involved to justice. The case has raised concerns about the misuse of power and the urgent need for accountability in the state.
