Imphal, 22nd May 2023: State police sources confirm that Indian army units were rushed to Manipur following reports of fresh clashes in the state.

The Army was rushed to the New Checkon locality in the state after a faction of the Meitei and Kuki communities started fighting again, disrupting the days of brokered fragile peace.

This is in continuation of the months of crisis in the state between the two tribes. Earlier this month, clashes erupted because of the Meiti demand for a Scheduled Tribe status. The Kuki rebels had organised a solidarity march that turned violent. Over 70 people lost their lives while property worth crores was torched, and thousands were forced to move out of the state.

The army and paramilitary forces have set up camp across the state, conducting routine patrols and assisting civilians after Union Home Minister Amit Shah promised to take measures against those responsible for the violence and has met with representatives from both communities.
