New Delhi (India), 14th June 2023: Shaktikanta Das, the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, was named ‘Governor of the Year’ for 2023 by Central Banking in London. Central Banking is a journal of worldwide economic research.
The award highlighted his performance as RBI Governor in regulating inflation and expertly managing India’s financial system during crises such as the COVID pandemic and global turmoils.
According to the organisers, the RBI governor is the driving force behind crucial reforms, has guaranteed the smooth administration of world-leading payments innovation, and has led India through challenging times.
The organisers said in a statement, “The RBI governor has cemented critical reforms, overseen world-leading payments innovation and steered India through difficult times with a steady hand and well-crafted turn of phrase.”
The newspaper recommended him for the honour in March 2023. He was given the title for his leadership of the central bank amid times of global turbulence and adversity.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, large non-banking companies, the Russia-Ukraine war, and other events, he oversaw India’s central bank and, eventually, the whole banking sector with skill.
He is the second Central Bank governor to receive the honour, following Raghuram Rajan, who received it in 2015.
During the epidemic, the RBI was important in introducing critical reforms, new payment systems, and growth-oriented policies.
Under his direction, India’s central bank was able to strike a balance between the need to control inflation and the need to handle political pressure.
