Wave of Flash floods grapples Assam, over 34,000 affected

Guwahati, 17th June 2023: Assam is witnessing a bout of flash floods this year owing to torrential rains over the last few days. Continuous rain is inundating fresh areas in 11 districts, affecting over 34,000 people.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) daily flood report, most rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have rising water levels in various places. Still, none are flowing above the danger mark.

The deluge has affected 34,189 people, including 14,675 women and 3,787 children. The districts affected are Bishwanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.

Lakhimpur has been hit the hardest, with nearly 23,516 individuals affected, followed by Dibrugarh (3,857), Darrang (2221), Bishwanath (2221), and Dhemaji (1,085).

Eleven relief distribution centres have been established, eight in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri.

Floods have affected 77 villages in Assam, and 209.67 hectares of cropland have been devastated, according to the ASDMA. Four barriers have been breached, two in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri.

Landslides have also been observed in several areas of Dima Hasao and Kamrup districts due to heavy rain, according to the report.
