New Delhi (01/07/2023): The Gujarat high court denied regular bail to Mumbai-based campaigner Teesta Setalvad on Saturday, ordering her to surrender immediately. The issue involves her allegedly fabricating evidence in post-Godhra riots charges in 2002.

Justice Nirzar Desai’s bench issued an order confirming the court’s decision to reject Setalvad’s bail request and ordering her to surrender immediately. Senior attorney Mihir Thakore asked the court to postpone the verdict’s execution for 30 days. Setalvad was granted temporary bail by the Supreme Court in September of last year, shielding him from arrest. She was thus released from judicial custody in the continuing lawsuit.

Setalvad is accused of spreading a bigger plot behind the 2002 riots and seeking to implicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others.
While opposing Setalvad’s application for regular release in the high court on June 15, the state’s prosecution emphasised that the accusations against Setalvad relate to the alleged fabrication of false evidence.

During the court hearing, the state government also labelled Setalvad as a “tool” of a politician with the task of defaming Gujarat.
