New Delhi, 10th July 2023: Heavy rain has knocked various districts of north India to their knees, costing at least 19 lives in the last three days. Many roads and buildings in cities and towns are still flooded in knee-deep water.
Over the next several days, the meteorological service predicts further rain in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, and its surrounding districts.
People from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi uploaded terrifying photographs of the unrest online, including automobiles floating like paper boats, filthy waters rushing into residential areas, structures flooded on the banks of swollen rivers, and land cave-ins.
Landslides and flash floods caused by persistent rain devastated residences and structures in Himachal Pradesh, paralysing regular life. As all major rivers, including the Ravi, Beas, Satluj, Swan, and Chenab, are in spate, some shops and vehicles have been washed away in Manali, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Chamba.
Landslides and flash floods were also recorded in nearby Uttarakhand, with water levels in rivers and streams above danger levels.
Today, all schools in Gurgaon and Delhi are closed due to flooding caused by heavy rain. The Gurgaon administration has also urged corporate houses to work from home today to minimise traffic bottlenecks.
After Haryana released more than one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage, the Delhi government established 16 control centres to monitor flood-prone districts.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will preside over a high-level meeting to resolve waterlogging caused by rain in the city and rising water levels in the Yamuna.
