Amid PM Modi’s visit, France adopts UPI, Indian tourists will be able to pay in Rupees

New Delhi, 14th July 2023: In a historic move, India and France have decided to utilise the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the European country. This is taking place during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day trip to Paris.
From the top of the Eiffel Tower, Prime Minister Modi announced that Indian tourists will soon be able to make Rupee payments via UPI. He was speaking to the Indian community at La Seine Musicale, a performing arts complex on an island in the Seine River.
PM Modi said, “”An agreement has been reached in France for the usage of India’s UPI…It will begin with the Eiffel Tower, and Indian tourists will be able to make payments in Rupees via UPI at the Eiffel Tower.
PM Modi also tweeted on July 14th, in the tweet he thanked the French Predicted for welcoming him. He wrote, “I thank President @EmmanuelMacron and Mrs. Macron for hosting me at the Élysée Palace this evening.”
In 2022, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which provides UPI services, inked an MoU with France’s secure online payment system, Lyra.
Prior to France, India struck a deal in 2023 with Singapore’s PayNow to allow users in both nations to conduct cross-border transactions. Meanwhile, the UAE, Bhutan, and Nepal have already implemented the UPI system.
The NPCI intends to expand UPI services to numerous other nations in Europe, West Asia, and the United States.
PM Modi also revealed that France has chosen to allow students studying a master’s degree in France long-term five-year visas. In his address to the Indian community, Prime Minister Modi urged people to invest heavily in India. He believes that now is the best time to invest in the country, and that those that do so early would benefit.
Further the Prime Minister praised India for being the mother of democracy and diversity and said, “This is our greatest strength. In India, there are more than 100 languages, 1,000 dialects. More than 32,000 newspapers get published every day in these languages.”
