New Delhi, 21st July 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated ahead of the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament that the data protection bill, which would be submitted in Parliament, will improve India’s standing abroad once it becomes law.
Modi said, “This session is critical because of the nature of the bills that will be introduced. They have an immediate influence on citizens. Our younger generations are thoroughly immersed in the digital world (Hamare yuva peeri jo puri tarah digital world k saath ek prakaar se netritva kar rahi hai).”
He further added, “The data protection bill will instill faith in every person of the country. The bill will also improve the country’s global standing.”
Since the Supreme Court declared the Right to Privacy to be fundamental in 2016, several segments of society have requested the law, with acceptable constraints.
The draught of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill was released last year, following the withdrawal of its predecessor, the Personal Data Protection Bill, by the Indian government for compliance issues.
The measure has gone through numerous rounds of discussions, following which revisions were made and it was eventually approved by the government, paving the way for it to be submitted in Parliament.
Once introduced in Parliament, the bill can be passed by both chambers and enacted into law. A legislative committee may conduct additional research on the measure before it is put to a vote.
