New Delhi, August 4, 2023: A faculty member of Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce (SCAC) in Pune was arrested on Thursday for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Hindu deities in a class, causing outrage among students and various organizations.

The arrest came after a complaint was filed against Ashok Sopan Dhole (43) by a member of ‘Samast Hindu Bandhav’, identifying himself as Ravindra Padwal.

Dhole, who teaches Hindi at SCAC, was charged under IPC Section 295A for deliberate acts intended to outrage religious sentiments. A video clip of Dhole’s lecture for Class 12, held on July 25, went viral on social media, leading to his suspension by the institution on Wednesday night.

SCAC Principal Hrishikesh Soman stated, “This was the first such complaint against him that was brought to our notice.” The college has formed a committee to take necessary action following government norms, according to Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director of Symbiosis Society and Pro-Chancellor of Symbiosis International University.

Before his arrest, Dhole clarified, “My intention was not to hurt religious sentiments. I want to apologize to whoever was hurt by my words.” He explained that he was teaching Bhakti Rasa and intended to convey that all religions are one and equal. He also added, “All Gods are one. All religions are one. There should be no discrimination between people of different religions.”

In response to the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and other organizations staged a protest outside the college. ABVP’s Secretary for western Maharashtra, Anil Thombre, stated, “By making derogatory remarks about Hindu deities, the faculty member has made an attempt to create disharmony among students.”

Senior Police Inspector Vipin Hasabnis confirmed the arrest and said, “The accused has insulted Hindu religion and has intentionally hurt religious sentiments, mine and those of others.” Dhole is expected to appear before the court on Friday for further proceedings.
