Tragic Cloudburst Claims Lives in Himachal’s Solan District, Heavy Rains Disrupt Life

New Delhi, August 14, 2023: A devastating cloudburst incident in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district has left seven individuals dead, while six have been successfully rescued following the catastrophe that struck Mamligh village in the Kandaghat subdivision. The incident resulted in the destruction of two houses and one cowshed, according to reports from news agency ANI.

Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu tweeted, “Devastated to hear about the loss of 7 precious lives in the tragic cloudburst incident… My heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving families.”

In the aftermath of the disaster, Chief Minister Sukhu has directed authorities to provide all necessary assistance and support to the affected families. As a precautionary measure, all educational institutions in the hill state will remain closed today due to heavy rains.

Additionally, the Chief Minister engaged with District Collectors for an assessment of the damages caused by landslides and road closures, instructing officials to monitor the situation closely. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for well-coordinated efforts to ensure road connectivity, electricity, and water supply remain operational.

The state’s Department of Education announced the cancellation of ongoing Post Graduate class examinations, including B.Ed exams scheduled for August 14, in light of the situation.

The ongoing heavy rains have been attributed to a fresh Western Disturbance affecting both Himachal Pradesh and neighboring Uttarakhand. The Indian Meteorological Department explained that the Monsoon trough’s positioning along the Himalayan foothills has led to South-westerly Arabian Sea monsoonal winds affecting the region.

Himachal Pradesh has been severely impacted by floods and landslides, recording a staggering loss of ₹7020.28 crore due to the monsoon’s ravaging effects. The monsoon season commenced on June 24, resulting in 257 reported deaths with various causes. Landslides, flash floods, road accidents, and other incidents accounted for these casualties.

Amid the destruction, 1,376 houses were damaged, and 7,935 houses partially impacted. 270 shops and 2,727 cowsheds also bore the brunt of the monsoon’s fury.

Numerous roads, including 2 National Highways, remain closed. Electricity and water supply schemes have been hampered, highlighting the ongoing challenges the state faces as it copes with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
