Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF) at BIMTECH, Greater Noida
As Peter Drucker quoted “Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship. This act that endows resources with the new capacity to create wealth.” This indeed holds true and was evident in the Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF)organised by Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) on 23rd August 2014.
The JWEF is an initiative derived from the World Entrepreneurship Forum that was created in 2008 by EMLYON Business School and KPMG and later joined by ACE Action Community for Entrepreneurship, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, ONLYLYON and Zhejiang University. The JWEF is a global community of students and young entrepreneurs. It aims at providing vision, insights and recommendations from the young generation. These recommendations and insights will be used by World Entrepreneurship Forum members during the Annual event and in their preparatory works.
The guests of honour for the forum were Dr. Anita Gupta, Jt. Director, DST, Ms. Rimy Oberoi, Founder, Oyster Learning, Dr. Nikhil Agarwal, World Entrepreneurship Forum Ambassador- India and Mr Siddhartha Upadhyay, Founder, August Fashions. Also, present amongst us was a star alumni of Bimtech and founder of Paradigm Pioneers, Mr. Mohammed Tariq.
“Nobody talks of entrepreneurship as survival, but that’s exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking.” The truth in this quote by Anita Roddick was witnessed in the competitive events in JWEF. The inaugural session was followed by the ‘City App: Challenge’. In this event the participants had to choose one city and design a Citizen friendly mobile application on behalf of the local Government for the betterment of people living in the city. The participants had to show a 5-7 minute video, audio or a power-point presentation to showcase the blueprint of their application which was followed by a question & answer round.
Another event which took place was ‘The Better Way’. This event was a live project, in which a group of four members had to choose a small entrepreneurial venture, do a rigorous analysis of every process and product and come up with an innovative and a creative method of doing the same business in an efficient and a better way. The idea behind this event was to find innovative methods of cost saving, improving the quality of products and enhancing the customer satisfaction.
These events were followed by ‘Comic Manager’ and ‘The Negotiator’. Comic manager was a comical way of solving the managerial problems. In this, participants were given comic characters and they were to use their humour and innovation in solving a business problem in a giant comic strip format. If Batman was for children, their corporate superhero was for managers. The Negotiator was a situation based competition, each team was given two sets of case studies and each team had to analyse their own case and come up with a proposal.
So, if you only had 140 characters to sell your idea– which characters would you choose? This is how the competition ‘Tweet Pitch’ challenged the participants, to come up with a new mantra which captured the core essence and portrayed the uniqueness of their product in less than 140 characters.
In these nerve cracking competitions, various prestigious institutes such as Lal Bahadur Shastri College, New Delhi, MITS, Gwalior, Army Institute of Technology, Pune, Department of Financial Studies (MFC), University of Delhi, Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Pune, Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani participated with vigour and enthusiasm. Bimtech not only organised but also took active part in all the events.

This event could not have been executed without the support of our esteemed sponsors among which were Subway, Domino’s Pizza, The Crème Castle,Mirch Masalay, Careesma, Lenskart.com, Pret Castle and Flying Machine, Pratap Garh Haveli, Hotel Bundi Haveli, Jawed Habib and Acura Spa. The event was a great success and BIMTECH’s high professional standards were reflected in this event and collated with that of JWEF. For an Institute that instils in its students the drive to innovate and dream, the JWEF was a wonderful platform to bring together ideas germinating in young minds across the nation.
