New Delhi (11/11/2024): In a significant milestone for global healthcare, Prof (Dr) JA Jayalal was installed as the President of the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) during its 27th Biennial Conference held at Hotel Green Park, Chennai on November 9, 2024. Prof (Dr) Jayalal succeeds Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai from Malaysia and takes over the leadership of an organization that represents medical communities across 56 countries.

Established in 1962 with its headquarters in London, the Commonwealth Medical Association continues to strengthen the capacities of National Medical Associations within the Commonwealth to enhance the health and well-being of their communities.

Prof (Dr) Jayalal, the Past National President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), was ceremonially installed by the outgoing President, Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai. The event was presided over by notable figures like Dr Suvanand Sahu (Deputy Director, UN Assembly Stop TB, Geneva), Dr Osahon Enabulele (Past President of the World Medical Association), Dr R.V. Asokan (President of IMA), and Dr Russel Franco D’Souza (International Director, UNESCO Bioethics).

The ceremony was further dignified by special greetings messages from S. Regupathy (Hon’ble Minister for Law, Courts, Prisons and Prevention of Corruption, Government of Tamilnadu) and Dr Ketan Desai (Former President of Medical Council of India, World Medical Association, and Indian Medical Association).

A distinguished assembly of leaders felicitated the new president, including Prof Dr Ved Prakash Mishra (President – Association of Medical Educators of India), Prof (Dr) Arulrhaj (Past President – CMA, IMA, IAP), Prof (Dr) Gordon Caruana Dingli (Past President of CMA), Prof (Dr) Vajira Dissenayake (Past President of CMA), Dr Preethi Wijegoonewardene (Past President, Sri Lanka Medical Association), Dr Anilkumar J Nayak (Hon. Secretary General – IMA), Prof (Dr) Maruthu Pandian (President, Association of Surgeons of India), Dr Satyajit Borah (Dean, IMA CGP), and Dr Abul Hasan (President, IMA TNSB).

In his installation speech, Prof (Dr) Jayalal shared his forward-thinking vision to strengthen the Commonwealth Medical Association’s efforts in making healthcare accessible, available, affordable, and equitable across the Commonwealth. He highlighted the importance of family medicine, digital health, antimicrobial resistance, and increasing the involvement of junior doctors in his agenda. Additionally, he launched the Commonwealth Alliance of Medical Professionals on Antimicrobial Resistance (CAMP – AMR), and released the Commonwealth Declaration on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Commonwealth Declaration for Empowerment of Junior Doctors.

“It is a profound honor to assume this role,” stated Prof (Dr) Jayalal. “I am deeply committed to advancing our shared objectives and ensuring that our efforts resonate across all Commonwealth countries.”

This momentous occasion was attended by senior leaders of National Medical Associations from various Commonwealth countries, expressing their support and optimism for Prof (Dr) Jayalal’s presidency, which is expected to be a golden era of CMA, enhancing India’s role as a global leader in healthcare.
