New Delhi, December 18, 2024: A roundtable discussion on the “Role of the Private Sector in Transforming Higher Education in India” and a felicitation program for educational entrepreneurs elected as Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies was held at The Park Hotel, New Delhi. Organized by the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), the event brought together prominent academicians, policymakers, and education stakeholders to deliberate on the key initiatives shaping the transformation of India’s higher education sector.
Addressing a program, Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chancellor of Lovely Professional University, emphasized the need for reforms to achieve the nation’s ambitious Vision 2047. He highlighted that while India boasts over 50,000 educational institutions and more than 1,200 universities, the path to quality education remains a challenge.
“We must focus on delivering quality education. Many universities today are graded as A, A+, or A++ by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which reflects their economic viability under UGC regulations. However, the process of obtaining approvals, such as nomenclature for programs, is riddled with delays, taking more than six months just for approval. This inefficiency hampers progress,” he remarked.
Dr. Mittal drew a comparison with other professional sectors like chartered accountancy, architecture, and medicine, which have strong associations and unions. These bodies are consulted and their feedback is taken seriously before any legislation or regulation is enacted. However, universities and educational institutions often face neglect, with their voices unheard and feedback overlooked.
He stressed the need for collective action, saying, “If we move forward together, nothing will be impossible. The industry demandser degrees today and will continue to do so even 10 years from now. The focus must be on developing competence. If we fail to adapt, others will take over, leaving our infrastructure underutilized.”
Dr. Mittal also pointed out the challenges posed by regulatory bodies when institutions attempt to innovate. He urged educators and institutions to strengthen organizations like EPSI (Education Promotion Society for India) to drive meaningful changes in the education system.
He concluded by expressing hope that through collective efforts, India’s education sector can align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India. “Together, we can give a new direction to the country’s education system and realize the dream of a developed India by 2047,” he affirmed.
The event concluded with participants reaffirming their dedication to elevating India’s higher education sector to global standards while preserving its cultural roots.
