New Delhi, January 7, 2025: Justice V. Ramasubramanian was honored at a grand felicitation ceremony held at the Speaker Hall, Constitution Club, celebrating his appointment as Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Organized by the All India Senior Advocates Association, the event was graced by eminent legal luminaries, bar leaders, and dignitaries from across the nation.

Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, Secretary General of the Association and President of the International Council of Jurists, London, delivered an inspiring address, applauding Justice Ramasubramanian’s illustrious 17-year judicial career. He highlighted Justice Ramasubramanian’s unwavering commitment to constitutional values, his empathetic approach to justice, and his ability to simplify complex legal issues for the common man.

Dr. Aggarwala further praised the newly appointed Chairperson for his reformist mindset and dedication to uplifting marginalized communities. A citation was presented in recognition of Justice Ramasubramanian’s distinguished contributions as an advocate and judge, underscoring his role as a jurist and a role model for the legal fraternity.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian, while addressing the gathering, remarked, “I am conscious of the immense responsibility that rests on my shoulders, given the high expectations placed upon this role. India’s incredible diversity makes it challenging to manage as a homogenous entity. We are a nation with followers of eight major religions, speakers of 22 official languages, and over 700 other languages and dialects. Additionally, our society is divided into at least 1,640 castes and communities, with people belonging to various ethnic groups. Managing such a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, and multi-linguistic nation as a cohesive unit is an enormous challenge.”

He added, “The evolution of human rights has progressed through multiple stages—from civil and political rights to socio-political and cultural rights, and now, fourth-generation rights influenced by advancements in science and technology. This includes discussions on preserving one’s body after death through cryogenics. The responsibilities of a human rights commission in a country as diverse as ours are monumental.”

Justice Ramasubramanian further explained, “Challenges to human rights emanate not only from state actors but also from non-state actors. When non-state actors pose threats, we rely on state actors to intervene. However, this intervention often complicates the protection of human rights for those non-state actors, creating unique challenges. Balancing the rights of individuals and communities in such a diverse nation requires immense dedication and nuanced decision-making.”

P. Wilson, Rajya Sabha MP, stated during the event, “We have decided to felicitate the Honorable Justice V. Ramasubramanian on behalf of the All India Senior Advocates Association for his significant contributions to judicial reforms. His exceptional qualities, profound legal knowledge, and ability to analyze complex legal issues make him an exemplary figure in the legal fraternity. Justice Ramasubramanian stands as a shining example of how hard work and persistence lead to success. His life and career are a testament to perseverance, intellectual brilliance, and an unwavering pursuit of justice.”

Despite his relatively short tenure at the Supreme Court, Justice Ramasubramanian made significant contributions, delivering a total of 102 judgments. His career is a living example of the immense impact of dedication and excellence in the legal field.

The event was a remarkable celebration of Justice Ramasubramanian’s enduring legacy and his continued commitment to justice and human rights.
