Historical Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and United Kingdom

New Delhi (26/07/2025): 24th July 2025 is the landmark date in the trade between India and UK. On this date the historical Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was signed between two countries. The importance of this FTA can be measured that it was signed by Indian Commerce & Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal and his counterpart UK Minister, Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of the two Prime Ministers. This is the biggest trade agreement signed by UK after its separation from the European Union. India is the major gainer of the agreement as 99% of its products being exported to UK, now will be on 0% duty. The duty on Apparel & Textiles, which was 12% earlier, will be zero after the agreement.

Lalit Thukral, President, Noida Apparel Export Cluster (NAEC) while welcoming the FTA, thanked Govt. of India specially Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi Ji for safeguarding the apparel sector and taking the agreement with UK on the conclusion after long deliberations and this is going to be a game changer. He says, UK is the 2nd largest export destination country of Indian apparel after USA. During 2023-24 India’s apparel exports to UK was 1,329 USD Min. He further said apparel exports to UK were stagnant for the last 4-5 years and this FTA will open new avenues and ensure apparel exports many folds increase to UK in coming years. It will also help our country to achieve the export target of 40 USD Bin. by 2030.

Thukral was of firm view that the FTA will enable the Indian apparel exporters to enter into the UK market with enhance competitiveness against Bangladesh & Vietnam, the major competitor of our country and also dent the apparel export from China to the UK. Moreover, FTA will certainly promote MSME units of apparel production units which account more than 80%. He advocated strengthening and creating infrastructures of the apparel sector to avail the maximum benefit of the FTA.
