The Spirit Behind the Celebrations
Rakesh Sonkar, President of the Pracheen Kali Mandir Trust, has been a consistent force behind the temple’s religious and community initiatives. He gained widespread recognition during the Covid-19 pandemic for his tireless work as a “Hunger Warrior.”
Amid the lockdown crisis, Sonkar initiated a Bhandara Sewa—a free food service—to support the economically disadvantaged. What began as a temporary relief initiative soon evolved into a permanent tradition at Kali Mandir. Today, the Bhandara continues daily, with people from all walks of life lining up to receive a wholesome meal—a testament to the spirit of seva (service).
Rakesh Sonkar Speaks
Reflecting on the Utsav and the ongoing food service, Sonkar shared:
> “It is a matter of immense pride that we were blessed to host the 10th Ganesh Utsav celebrations at Kali Mandir, Kotla.
As far as the Bhandara Sewa is concerned, it is indeed true that our initial aim was to continue it only during the lockdown phase. But God had different plans. We were inspired to keep it going—serving humanity beyond crisis.
Our team of like-minded, passionate volunteers feels overwhelmed and honored to play the role of ‘Hunger Warriors’—especially within the sacred premises of Kali Mandir.”
The Kali Mandir Ganesh Utsav is now more than just a religious gathering—it’s a celebration of faith, community service, and humanity at its best.
