Vaithilingam’s switch strengthens DMK’s delta strategy ahead of Assembly polls
Chennai, Jan 22 (IANS) The induction of R. Vaithilingam, a veteran leader from the politically crucial delta region and a former key associate of O. Panneerselvam, is being seen as a major strategic boost for the DMK ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Widely regarded as one of the most experienced and influential politicians from the delta, Vaithilingam’s entry adds seniority, organisational depth and caste balance to the DMK at a time when the party is sharpening its electoral machinery.
A seasoned leader who rose during the regime of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, Vaithilingam was a long-standing member of the influential ‘Aivar Ani’, a select group of five leaders who interacted directly with Jayalalithaa on key party matters.
Known as a bold and decisive organiser, he built a formidable political base by overseeing work across nearly 25 Assembly segments in the delta region, earning him strong grassroots support and a reputation as a mass leader with independent clout. His political standing was underlined in the 2021 Assembly elections when, despite the DMK’s landslide victory statewide, Vaithilingam emerged as one of the few AIADMK leaders from the delta to secure a convincing win.
The result was widely attributed to his personal popularity and organisational strength rather than party momentum, reinforcing his image as a leader with deep voter connect.
With his move to the DMK, party strategists believe Vaithilingam can play a decisive role in further consolidating the party’s position in the delta area.
His induction is also significant given the DMK’s relative lack of senior, experienced leaders in parts of the region, particularly from the Kallar community, to which he belongs. His presence is expected to bridge this organisational gap and strengthen outreach among key social groups.
Meanwhile, reliable party sources indicate that Vaithilingam is likely to be appointed district secretary for the Orathanadu-Peravurani-Pattukkottai combine in Thanjavur district, an area considered a stronghold of the Kallar community. If the appointment materialises, it is expected to help him reassert his political influence across the delta while giving the DMK a seasoned hand to steer its campaign and organisational efforts in one of Tamil Nadu’s most electorally sensitive regions.
