“The Day Success Felt Empty: Discovering the True Co-pilot Within”

Sr. Rekha Punia, UMI

This year, when the Class X CBSE result was declared, it should have been the happiest day for me. And truly, on paper, it was a day of great victory. We had touched our highest ever result of 99.4%, and for the first time the school average crossed 80%. It was a milestone worth celebrating, a moment that should have filled my heart with pure joy and gratitude.

But life has a strange way of revealing what lies beneath the surface. Just at that very time, a minor unpleasant incident occurred. It was small, perhaps insignificant in the eyes of others, but it struck me intensely. In a matter of moments, I found myself drowned in automatic reaction. Instead of standing in the light of achievement, I was pulled into the shadows of hurt, agitation, and inner unrest.

That evening, I asked myself: How can one small moment overpower such a big blessing? That question kept disturbing me. That is when I began to realize how urgent and important it is – to stop living on AUTO-PILOT mode, driven by limited perceptions and immediate reactions.

Life, after all, is not meant to be lived on auto-pilot. Auto-pilot may be useful for machines, but not for the human heart. When we live on auto-pilot, we respond without reflecting, react without praying, speak without listening, and get carried away by the moment. In such a life, emotions become the captain, circumstances become the compass, and the self gets easily lost.

In an air-flight, there is this concept of ‘co-pilot’. The co-pilot (also called the First Officer) is not just an assistant sitting quietly beside the captain. He is a fully trained pilot, equally capable of flying the aircraft. The beauty lies in how the captain and co-pilot work together in perfect coordination.

Before the flight even begins, both pilots sit together to plan…checking the route, weather conditions, fuel, and possible challenges. When one pilot is unwell or unsure of things, he hands over the control to the other. The pilot currently flying says, “You have control.” The other responds, “I have control.” And then the first pilot confirms, “You have control.” Only after this three-way confirmation does the transfer becomes complete. Until those words are spoken and acknowledged, control is not considered handed over, even if one pilot has physically touched the controls.

But it doesn’t stop at words. The pilot taking over is fully attentive – hands on the controls, eyes on the instruments, aware of altitude, direction, and speed. The one handing over doesn’t become careless; instead, he continues to monitor, support, and stay alert. It is not abandonment – it is trust with awareness.

Now the deeper insight… Just like in a cockpit, life is safest not when one flies alone, but when there is a trusted Co-pilot ‘The Holy Spirit’ beside – calmly guiding every move toward a safe and meaningful landing. Spiritually, we often say, “Holy Spirit, take control,” but many times it remains only a thought, not a true handover. A real ‘handover’ to the Holy Spirit is just as conscious as in a cockpit.

A few days later, I consciously tried something different. When another small issue came up – a disappointment, a negligence – I felt the same reaction rising inside me. But this time, I paused. I did not respond immediately. I just said a small prayer within: “Holy Spirit, guide me.”

Nothing dramatic happened outwardly. But inside, the intensity reduced. I spoke more calmly. The situation passed without disturbing my peace. That is when I began to understand what it means to let the Holy Spirit be the Co-pilot. Then the heart learns to pause before reacting, to discern before deciding, to forgive before hardening, and to trust even when things do not go as planned.

I am still learning…still practicing…still failing miserably at times…but one thing is becoming clearer each day: Life becomes lighter, calmer, and clearer when I am not driving alone. Because the true peace of life does not come from perfect situations…it comes from having the right Co-pilot within. HAPPY PENTECOST!
