Recently Concluded Elections in Five States Witnessed Unprecedented Public Participation: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi, June 12, 2026: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Friday said that the recently concluded elections in five states witnessed an unprecedented level of public participation since India’s Independence, highlighting the growing strength of the country’s democratic process.

The remarks were made during a one-day Conference for Media and Communication Officers organized by the Election Commission of India (ECI), which brought together more than 350 Media Nodal Officers (MNOs), Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs), District Media Nodal Officers, and District Public Relations Officers (PROs) from all 36 States and Union Territories.

Addressing the participants, CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the crucial role of effective communication in ensuring transparency and public trust in the electoral process. He urged officers to ensure that all election-related communication is timely, fact-based, legally accurate, and easy for citizens to understand.

Election Commissioner Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu stressed that communication strategies should focus on creating impact rather than merely disseminating information, while Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi highlighted the responsibility of media officers in making the Commission’s rules, instructions, and guidelines accessible to the public in a simple and understandable manner.

The conference featured comprehensive sessions covering communication strategies throughout the election cycle—from electoral rolls to polling, the ECINET platform, constitutional provisions, election laws, and recent Supreme Court judgments affecting the electoral process.

Participants also attended practical workshops on drafting effective press notes, amplifying official information through traditional and social media, combating misinformation and false narratives, engaging young voters through Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs), and communicating key ECI initiatives to the public.

A key highlight of the programme was the sharing of experiences and best practices by officers from states that recently conducted elections. The conference concluded with an interactive Question and Answer session chaired by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, allowing participants to discuss challenges and strengthen communication mechanisms for future elections.

The Election Commission said the initiative aims to build a robust and responsive media network capable of delivering accurate and timely election-related information, thereby enhancing voter awareness and reinforcing confidence in India’s democratic institutions.
