New Delhi News (20 July 2026): Amid escalating protests in the national capital over the NEET controversy and in support of activist Sonam Wangchuk, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Centre, accusing it of ignoring humanitarian concerns and students’ interests. His remarks came after police used force, including lathi-charge and tear gas, to disperse protesters marching towards Parliament.
While Talking to Ten News Network Expressed solidarity with the protest, Tiruchi Siva said the agitation was not a one-day event but had been continuing for more than 20 days. Referring to Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, he alleged that the government failed to respond even as Wangchuk’s health deteriorated.
It’s not today’s protest, it has been going for more than 20 days. When Mr. Sonam Wangchuk was undergoing fasting, his health was deteriorating. The government didn’t yield even with the least humanitarian consideration. They didn’t call him, they didn’t advise him to call off the fasting, or at least listen to their demands. It was only after the Delhi High Court intervened that he was admitted to the hospital and a life was saved. This government does not have any humanitarian approach, Siva said.
Targeting the Centre over the NEET examination, the DMK leader reiterated his party’s long-standing demand to scrap the medical entrance test. Tamil Nadu and DMK have been the first voice in India to oppose NEET. It has not brought any good; instead, it has cost the lives of students. After repeated paper leaks and other irregularities, many students have become frustrated. NEET should be rolled back, he said.
Demanding accountability, Siva also called for the resignation of the Union Education Minister. Around 150 examination leaks have happened. The Education Minister should take moral responsibility and resign. This is our demand, he asserted.
When asked whether the DMK supported the ongoing protest, Siva replied, Of course, we are supporting. It was our first demand and voice. We support it.Reacting to reports of police action against protesters, he described the use of force as “inhuman”, saying such restraint should not be exercised while dispersing a crowd.
Reiterating the DMK’s stand, Siva said the party’s foremost demand remains the rollback of NEET, arguing that it undermines students’ years of academic performance. Till Class 12, whatever students have studied and the marks they secured are thrown into the dustbin. Then, based on an exam of just two or three hours, you decide whether a person is qualified to become a doctor. What kind of system is that? he said.
The remarks come at a time when protests over NEET and support for Sonam Wangchuk’s campaign have intensified in Delhi, with opposition parties demanding greater accountability from the Centre. While the government has yet to respond to the latest demands raised by the DMK, the issue is expected to remain a key flashpoint both inside and outside Parliament in the coming days.
