Two Thai nationals arrested in Kolkata with banned narcotics
Kolkata, July 22 (IANS) Kolkata Police informed on Wednesday morning that two Thai nationals were arrested in Kolkata on Tuesday with banned narcotics. The two women had come to the city disguised as tourists but in reality they had smuggled the drugs into West Bengal.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested the two women from Bangkok from Bhowanipore area of south Kolkata in possession of banned drug named ecstasy.
When it is in tablet form, it is called Ecstasy and when it is in the form of granules, it is called ‘Molly’. The formal name of this foreign drug is MDMA.
Police said that the names of the two Thai women are Supawadi Sukuliyat and Suthuwana Kut. They flew to Kolkata from Bangkok on tourist visas to smuggle these foreign drugs.
They arrived at the Bhowanipore area from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport on Tuesday morning.
The two drug smugglers had planned to stay at a hotel in Bhowanipore. Detectives raided the place yesterday. After searching the clothes of the two foreign women, the drug ‘molly’ was recovered from them. The 20 grams of the drug recovered from their possession is worth more than Rs 1 lakh.
According to Intelligence sources, for some time now, STF officials have been receiving information that drugs are being smuggled from Bangkok to Kolkata. There is a huge demand for foreign drugs like Ecstasy or Molly, i.e. MDMA, LCD, Cocaine among some young people who are used to rave parties in some parts of the city on weekends. Usually, foreign drug traffickers are contacted through the dark web or through secret agents.
Recently, Kolkata Police STF detectives came to know that drug trafficker agents in Kolkata were contacting traffickers in Bangkok and some cities in Thailand for foreign drugs.
After investigating, they came to know that two foreigners were staying at a hotel in Bhowanipore disguised as tourists. They were supposed to hand over the drugs to the Kolkata drug trafficker’s agents.
Initially, the foreign women arrested during interrogation told the detectives that they have training in drug trafficking. They bring drugs with such secrecy that their bags are not detected even after being checked in the scanner at the Bangkok or Kolkata airports.
The detectives are trying to find out whether they have previously smuggled drugs into Kolkata or any other city in the country.
According to the detectives, agents in Kolkata also make arrangements for these women to stay and move around in the city. The police said that they are interrogating them and are searching for drug traffickers in Kolkata.
