India’s coal output rises 7.5 pc to 69.75 MT in July, dispatch jumps 17 pc

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS) India’s coal production rose 7.51 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in July 2026 to 69.75 million tonnes (MT) (provisional), driven by higher output from state-run miner Coal India Ltd. (CIL) and steady growth across the sector, according to the Ministry of Coal on Sunday.

The country’s coal production stood at 64.88 MT in July 2025, as per its official statement.

Coal dispatch recorded an even stronger performance during the month, increasing 17.34 per cent year-on-year to 86.33 MT (provisional), compared with 73.57 MT in the corresponding month last year.

The ministry said the sustained rise in production and dispatch reflects its continued efforts to ensure stable coal supplies and maintain operational efficiency across the sector.

During the first four months of the current financial year, cumulative coal production reached 302.24 MT (provisional), while cumulative dispatch stood at 354.70 MT (provisional), registering a growth of 5.87 per cent over the same period of the previous financial year.

Coal India Ltd. remained the biggest contributor to the country’s output, producing 50.35 MT of coal in July, an increase of 8.42 per cent over the year-ago period. The state-owned miner also dispatched 63.67 MT of coal during the month, up 17.43 per cent from July 2025.

CIL’s cumulative coal dispatch during the April-July period of FY27 also recorded a 6.81 per cent growth compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year, highlighting the company’s continued role in meeting the country’s rising energy demand.

The Ministry of Coal said it remains focused on sustaining growth in the sector, improving coal availability and reducing India’s dependence on imports. It added that the continued increase in production and dispatch reinforces the coal sector’s crucial role in supporting the country’s economic growth and energy security.
