Delhi Chinese Manjha Menace: Third Incident in 10 Days Leaves Youth With Severe Neck Injury

New Delhi, August 16, 2026: The threat posed by banned Chinese manjha has resurfaced in Delhi, with a 35-year-old man sustaining serious injuries to his neck after the kite string became entangled around his throat while he was riding a motorcycle in the Maujpur area of northeast Delhi on Saturday.

According to police, the incident involved Gaurav Sharma, who was riding his motorcycle when the Chinese manjha suddenly caught around his neck. He lost control of the vehicle and fell on the road. Passersby rushed him to a hospital for treatment. Police received information about the incident from GTB Hospital at around 2 pm. His condition is now reported to be stable and out of danger.

The incident comes amid intensified police action against the sale and use of banned Chinese manjha. During a special drive launched around Independence Day, police arrested a man from Begumpur in Rohini and recovered 80 reels of Chinese manjha from his possession. Police said raids against sellers of the banned string are being conducted regularly.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has already imposed a ban on Chinese manjha, citing the risks it poses to people, birds and the environment. Despite the ban, incidents involving the hazardous kite string continue to be reported across the national capital.

In another incident in east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area, a 17-year-old boy was injured while flying a kite. Police suspect that the kite string came into contact with an 11-kV electricity line, resulting in an electric shock. His family immediately rushed him to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

According to police, this is the third serious incident linked to Chinese or loose kite strings in Delhi in the past 10 days.

Earlier, on Wednesday, a three-year-old boy travelling on a two-wheeler with his elder brother in Maujpur was injured after a loose kite string became entangled around his neck. In another incident on August 5, a 32-year-old businessman suffered a cut to his neck caused by a kite string in Uttam Nagar.

With such incidents continuing despite the ban, Delhi Police have stepped up enforcement against the illegal sale and use of Chinese manjha. However, the continued availability and use of the banned string remain a serious public safety concern in the capital.
