Diesel & Petrol No Longer Needed: Yotuh Energy Develops Battery-Powered System for Trucks

National News (29 August 2026): In a move aimed at transforming India’s cold-chain transportation sector, Chennai-based climate-tech startup Yotuh Energy has developed a battery-powered refrigeration system designed to keep food, dairy and other temperature-sensitive products cold during transportation without relying on the vehicle’s engine.
Founded in 2022 by three IIT Delhi alumni—Shaivi Malik, Vivek Mahindrakar and Dharmik Bapodara—Yotuh Energy is working to provide a more efficient and potentially cost-effective alternative to conventional refrigeration systems used in refrigerated trucks and delivery vehicles.
From Climate-Tech Solutions to Cold-Chain Logistics
The founders began exploring hardware-based solutions to climate-related challenges in 2021. Their initial work focused on opportunities in renewable energy and energy-storage technologies. However, after studying the logistics sector more closely, they identified cold-chain transportation as an area where technological intervention could address significant operational challenges.
Following the company’s establishment in 2022, the founders interacted extensively with truck drivers, fleet operators and transporters to understand the practical difficulties involved in maintaining temperature-controlled transportation. Their discussions helped the team identify the limitations of existing systems and develop a refrigeration solution tailored to real-world transport requirements.
Refrigeration Works Independently of Vehicle Engine
One of the key features of Yotuh Energy’s technology is its engine-independent operation. Unlike conventional refrigeration units that can depend on the vehicle’s engine for power, the startup’s system uses a dedicated battery setup to operate the cooling equipment.
This design allows the refrigeration unit to be installed across different types of commercial vehicles, including diesel, CNG, petrol and electric vehicles. The system can also continue operating when the vehicle engine is switched off, helping maintain the required temperature while the vehicle is parked or during loading and unloading operations.
The company has developed four different refrigeration unit variants, designed to cater to vehicles of varying sizes and different temperature-control requirements.
Temperature Range from +25°C to -20°C
According to Yotuh Energy, its refrigeration technology can maintain temperatures ranging from approximately +25°C to -20°C, depending on the application and operating requirements.
The system incorporates Adaptive Temperature Control technology, which dynamically adjusts cooling based on factors such as the quantity of goods inside the vehicle, ambient temperature and operating conditions.
By adapting cooling requirements instead of maintaining a fixed cooling load continuously, the technology is designed to improve energy utilisation and help reduce refrigeration-related operating costs.
Potential to Expand Refrigerated Deliveries
The battery-powered approach could have particular relevance for India’s growing demand for temperature-controlled logistics. Food, dairy and other perishable products require uninterrupted temperature management throughout transportation, making reliable refrigeration an important component of the cold-chain network.
Yotuh Energy believes its technology could also make refrigerated transportation more accessible for smaller commercial vehicles, potentially allowing them to be used for temperature-controlled last-mile and short-distance deliveries.
Startup Records ₹1.5 Crore Revenue in FY26
Yotuh Energy recorded revenue of approximately ₹1.5 crore during the financial year 2025-26. During the same period, the startup sold around 18 to 20 refrigeration units, according to the company. With its initial commercial deployment underway, the climate-tech startup is now preparing to expand its footprint across major Indian cities.
For FY 2026-27, Yotuh Energy has set a target of deploying more than 200 refrigeration units on Indian roads.
The company sees its battery-powered refrigeration technology as a potential alternative to conventional engine-dependent systems, particularly as India’s logistics industry increasingly looks for solutions that can lower operating costs, improve efficiency and support cleaner transportation.
As demand for refrigerated logistics continues to grow across food, dairy and other temperature-sensitive supply chains, technologies that can operate independently of vehicle engines could play an increasingly important role in the evolution of India’s cold-chain infrastructure.
