BJP Alleges Drug Menace Persists in Punjab, Demands Bhagwant Mann & Harpal Singh Cheema’s Resignation

National News (09 September 2026): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stepped up its attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government over the state’s drug problem, alleging that the administration has failed to curb the circulation of drugs commonly referred to as “chitta” and has instead ignored people raising concerns about the issue.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP’s Central Office in New Delhi on Tuesday, BJP National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that the recent death of Sangrur resident Gulzar Singh highlights the seriousness of the drug crisis and the alleged lack of action by the state government.

According to Bhatia, Gulzar Singh had approached Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and raised concerns about his son’s alleged drug addiction. He reportedly appealed to the minister to take action against the drug trade and help save young people from addiction.

Bhatia claimed that instead of receiving assistance, Gulzar Singh was allegedly subjected to pressure and intimidation by local AAP leaders and others. He said that after the minister’s visit, Gulzar Singh was allegedly asked to apologise for questioning the minister.

BJP Calls Gulzar Singh’s Video a ‘Dying Declaration’

Bhatia said Gulzar Singh later consumed poison and was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he subsequently died. Before his death, Gulzar Singh reportedly recorded a video in which he named four people whom he held responsible for his situation.

The BJP spokesperson argued that the video should be examined as a possible dying declaration and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gulzar Singh’s death.

Bhatia also demanded that the authorities consider action under relevant provisions of law, including the SC/ST Act and Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), subject to the findings of the investigation.

‘Chitta Has Not Stopped in Punjab’, BJP Claims

A major part of Bhatia’s criticism focused on the state government’s claims regarding action against drugs. He referred to Gulzar Singh’s reported statement that his son was still consuming chitta and that the substance remained easily available.

The BJP leader argued that the statement contradicts the government’s claims that the drug supply has been brought under control in Punjab.

Bhatia alleged that the incident demonstrates the gap between government claims and the situation being faced by families affected by drug addiction. He said Gulzar Singh had reportedly sold valuables from his home to finance his son’s treatment but continued to struggle with the consequences of addiction.

BJP Targets Bhagwant Mann Over Drug Crisis

Bhatia launched a direct attack on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, questioning the Punjab government’s ability to achieve a drug-free state.

He alleged that the state administration had failed to take effective action against the drug network and accused the government of remaining insensitive to families affected by addiction. The BJP spokesperson also referred to an earlier case in which, according to him, a mother lost all five of her sons allegedly due to drug consumption. He said that despite the family’s appeals for intervention, no effective response was forthcoming from the state government.

BJP Raises Mohanjeet Singh Shero Case

Bhatia also cited the case of Mohanjeet Singh Shero, who, according to the BJP, had raised his voice against the alleged drug trade in Patiala.

He alleged that Shero was arrested and subjected to assault, arguing that such incidents indicate that people speaking out against drugs are facing pressure instead of receiving protection. The BJP spokesperson accused the Punjab government of failing to take sufficiently strong action against those allegedly involved in the drug trade and claimed that people highlighting the problem were being targeted.

BJP Demands Resignations and Strict Action

Bhatia demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, holding the state government politically responsible for what he described as the continuing drug crisis.

He further called for an impartial investigation into Gulzar Singh’s death and said that the video recorded before his death should be given due consideration by investigating agencies. The BJP spokesperson said the party would continue to raise the issue of drug abuse in Punjab and would press for stronger action against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
