Tata Steel Commissions India’s First Coke Oven Gas Injection Project at Meramandali to Cut Fossil Fuel Use & CO₂ Emissions

National News (12 September 2026): Tata Steel has commissioned a first-of-its-kind Coke Oven Gas (COG) Injection Project at Blast Furnace 1 of its Meramandali plant in Odisha, marking a significant step towards cleaner and more resource-efficient steel production in India. The project is aimed at reducing the consumption of external fossil fuels and lowering carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions during the blast furnace iron-making process. The initiative also supports Tata Steel’s long-term objective of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045.
According to Tata Steel, the project demonstrates the company’s efforts to adopt advanced technologies that can reduce the carbon intensity of conventional steelmaking while improving the utilisation of gases generated within an integrated steel plant.
Coke Oven Gas to Replace Part of Fossil Fuel Use
Coke Oven Gas is a by-product generated during the coke-making process. It contains hydrogen and hydrocarbons and is generally used for applications such as power generation and industrial heating. In some situations, such gases may also be flared.
Under the newly commissioned project, Tata Steel is injecting COG directly into the blast furnace through tuyeres, enabling the gas to be used as a reductant and helping replace a portion of the fossil fuel traditionally required in the iron-making process. The company has implemented the technology with support from Paul Wurth-SMS, its technology partner, while Kobelco supplied the associated equipment.
Three-Fuel Operation to Improve Flexibility
Beyond the potential reduction in fossil fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, the project allows Blast Furnace 1 to operate with a three-fuel injection system. Tata Steel said this provides greater flexibility in managing fuel requirements and can contribute to improved operational efficiency.
The company highlighted that the safe and stable deployment of advanced injection technology is also an important component of its broader strategy to develop lower-carbon steelmaking processes.
Tata Steel Highlights Low-Carbon Technology Focus
Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene, Tata Steel, said the initiative reflects the company’s approach of maximising the use of process gases to reduce dependence on external fossil fuels. He said Tata Steel remains focused on demonstrating and scaling low-carbon technologies as it works towards its Net Zero by 2045 ambition.
Sudhir Kumar Mehta, Vice President – Operations, Tata Steel Meramandali, said the project reflects the company’s efforts to improve operational efficiency while reducing the environmental footprint of its manufacturing processes. He noted that using coke oven gas productively within the blast furnace process can help make steelmaking operations more efficient and environmentally responsible.
Tata Steel’s Earlier Blast Furnace Technology Initiatives
Tata Steel said it has previously undertaken several initiatives involving alternative and lower-carbon injection technologies in blast furnaces. The company has demonstrated the injection of coal bed methane, hydrogen and biochar as part of its efforts to explore technologies that can reduce the carbon intensity of ironmaking.
The COG injection project at Meramandali adds another technology to this portfolio and is intended to support the company’s transition towards more sustainable steel production.
Part of Tata Steel’s Net Zero Roadmap
The Meramandali project forms part of Tata Steel’s wider sustainability strategy. The company has set a target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045 and has been pursuing technological interventions across its operations to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Tata Steel said the new project demonstrates how process gases generated within an integrated steelmaking facility can be put to productive use, reducing reliance on externally sourced fossil fuels while creating greater flexibility in blast furnace operations.
With the commissioning of the COG injection system at Blast Furnace 1, Tata Steel is positioning the Meramandali plant as another site for the deployment of advanced technologies aimed at supporting the future of lower-carbon steelmaking in India.
