Police raid UP prisons and find huge haul of mobiles, drugs and cash

A sudden sweep of Uttar Pradesh’s prisons saw the authorities seize a huge haul of mobile phones, narcotics, liquor, cigarette packs, lighters and cash from prisoners.

The local administration and police on Sunday conducted massive raids in over 40 jails in Uttar Pradesh and recovered many prohibited items including sharp weapons, mobile phones, narcotics, liquor, cigarette packs, lighters and cash.

The operation was conducted on the basis of complaints that hardcore criminals and jail authorities were hand-in-glove in bringing many prohibited items inside the jail premises.

There were also reports that some high-profile goons were running their kidnapping and contract killing rackets with the help of mobile phones from the jails of Mau, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Naini, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Azamgarh, Kannauj, Sambhal, Shahjehanpur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Farrukhabad and Ghaziabad.

The raiding team recovered a dozen mobile phones and some knives from Pratapgarh District Jail. They found bear bottles, narcotics and huge quantity of liquor from Kannauj District Jail.

Sharp-edged knives, blamed and scissors were found in Faizabad jail. These items are prohibited because many prisoners threaten other inmates by showing those things.

There were also instances of prisoners committing suicide with the help of those sharp weapons.

Sharp-edged weapons were also found in Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Barabanki jails.

The authorities recovered Rs 12000 from the cells of four prisoners in Mainpuri jail.
