AAP Threatens Withdrawal from INDIA Bloc Meeting Over Congress Alliance Uncertainty
Mumbai, August 17, 2023: Tensions are escalating within the INDIA bloc as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) issued a stern ultimatum ahead of its third meeting in Mumbai. AAP has threatened to withdraw its participation unless the Congress clarifies its stance on forming an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. The dispute revolves around Congress’ decision to contest all seven Lok Sabha seats in the capital.
Delhi Congress leader Alka Lamba, in a bid to quell the brewing controversy, emphasized that her statement on Congress’ preparedness for the upcoming elections did not specify whether an alliance was being considered or not. Lamba took to Twitter to assert, “What is the controversy about? Judega Bharat, jeetega India,” referencing the unity of the country despite the political discord.
The heart of the matter lies in Lamba’s initial assertion after a Congress meeting on election preparedness. She revealed, “We will prepare on all 7 seats. Whoever has Delhi has the country.” Lamba clarified that there were no formal discussions on forming an alliance but confirmed that the party had been instructed to be ready for all seven seats, indicating Congress’ intent to contest without a coalition.
The AAP’s threat hinges on the crucial seat-sharing talks within the INDIA bloc, led by Congress. While AAP and Congress have traditionally been rivals in Delhi and Punjab, they found common ground in the INDIA bloc, thanks to Congress’ support for the Delhi services bill. AAP’s participation in the bloc now hangs in the balance as they raise concerns over Congress contesting all seven Delhi seats.
“If they do not want an alliance in Delhi, then going to INDIA meeting is pointless and a waste of time. Our top leadership will decide whether we have to attend the next INDIA meeting,” warned AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar, underlining the seriousness of the situation.
The discord took a personal turn when Congress’s Delhi in-charge Deepak Babaria dismissed Alka Lamba’s credibility, labeling her as “not a mature spokesperson” and unauthorized to comment on significant matters. Lamba, who had previously switched allegiances between AAP and Congress, joined AAP in 2014 before returning to Congress in 2019.
