New Delhi (16/06/2023): The mythological epic film ‘Adipurush’ finally arrived in theatres throughout the world on Friday, after a long wait and a last-minute delay.

Shows in certain Telugu-speaking zones began as early as 2 am, with fans packing theatres and setting off firecrackers to celebrate what is being billed as actor Prabhas’ triumphant return to form.

Despite mixed reviews, Adipurush is on track to enjoy a record-breaking opening day at the box office.

Sacnilk, an industry tracker, predicts a Rs 85 crore domestic debut, with a Rs 25 crore expected take from the Hindi-speaking belt and another Rs 60 crore from the Telugu states. Manobala Vijayabalan, a trade analyst, estimated a global gross opening of between Rs 130 crore and Rs 150 crore.

As grand as it sounds, it’s still roughly Rs 100 crore short of SS Rajamouli’s RRR’s Rs 257 crore opening day gross in 2022. Even Prabhas’ own Baahubali 2 grossed more over Rs 200 crore on its first day internationally.

The budget for Adipurush was likely increased even higher after the film’s teaser received unfavourable feedback, forcing T-Series to delay its release in order to fine-tune its visual effects. Early assessments from screenings indicate that the visual effects are still far from ideal.

Adipurush was due to make its global premiere earlier this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, but it was cancelled without explanation. The film, which also stars Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Saif Ali Khan, is being distributed in over 6000 screens in India.
