New Delhi, 15th June 2023: Heavy rain lashed Delhi and Mumbai overnight as the Monsoon arrived in both cities simultaneously, an unusual occurrence.

While it arrived in the national capital two days ahead of schedule, it arrived in Mumbai two weeks late, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The last time Monsoon hit both Mumbai and Delhi at the same time was on June 21, 1961.

“The southwest Monsoon is currently active. It has reached the whole state of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. Monsoon has also arrived in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir. It will proceed in the next two days and cover other areas,” said Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD.

Even as rain provided relief from the searing heat in Delhi and the surrounding areas, waterlogging was recorded in some districts of Gurugram.

Heavy rain fell on Mumbai and its suburbs in the previous 24 hours, causing flooding and traffic jams in several areas. The IMD predicts that the city will see more showers during the day.

Andheri, Malad, and Dahisar were hardest hit by the rain last evening. Social media images showed individuals dragging cars through the flooded streets. As torrential rain lashed areas of Maharashtra, the weather service issued an Orange signal for Raigad and Ratnagiri. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for Palghar, Mumbai, Thane, and Sindhudurg.
