AIPC organises a Panel discussion and Debate on ‘Higher Education Under Siege? In Capital!

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government’s recent draft of the Higher Education Commission Bill aims to dramatically alter the way higher learning is governed in the country. Congress fears that the Bill could result in the concentration of power in the hands of the Centre.

On Sunday, In New Delhi, Mudit Agarwal, Member of AICC with All India Professionals Congress (AIPC) organized a Discussion and Debate on ‘Higher Education Under Siege?’. The debate aim was to discuss the Policy Changes In Higher Education And Its Impact On India And People.

The panelist Included, Kapil Sibal, Member of Parliament, and former Union Minister for Education, Professor S. K. Thorat, eminent economist, Director-Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, Professor Emeritus, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Professor G. S. Bajpai, eminent scholar of jurisprudence, and Registrar of National Law University, New Delhi, Professor Aditya Mukherjee, eminent historian and professor of history at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and Aditya Narayan Mishra, Former President Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) & Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA).

The Elite Panelist while discussing Disscused that, There was no need to disband the University Grants Commission and replace it with a Higher Education Commission of India. The fundamental aim of the draft bill is to abolish the existing University Grants Commission (UGC), the country’s apex body that distributes funds to public universities based on certain criteria.

While Debating, Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, “The moment government interferes in universities it kills anatomy. The chairman of the commission wil be appointed by the government. Besides the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, the commission will have 12 members. All of them will be appointed by the Central government. Out of the 12, three will be IAS officers representing the Central government. Four will be heads of various Central bodies like the All India Technical Education Council and National Council of Teachers Education. So who sits in Commission will be decided by them.”
