Hyderabad (Telangana), 16th May 2023: Amazon has recently laid off over 500 employees in India across various verticals. This latest wave of layoffs is part of a larger round announced by CEO Andy Jassy in March, which affected around 9,000 people.
According to persons acquainted with the situation, the process is still underway, and personnel from the Amazon Web Services(AWS), Human Resources, and Support departments are being laid off.
According to sources, some of the affected employees are members of Amazon’s global teams that are working in India. As part of the ongoing restructure, various seller onboarding operations in tier-2 cities such as Kochi and Lucknow have also been discontinued.
Mr. Jassy stated in a statement to employees released online by Amazon that the decision to reduce 9,000 jobs arose from ongoing study of priorities and economic uncertainty.
The world’s largest online retailer spent much of last year adjusting to a dramatic slowdown in e-commerce growth as customers resumed their pre-pandemic habits.
In April, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told analysts that AWS growth will slow further as commercial customers braced for instability and cut back on expenditure.
Amazon is one of several prominent tech companies, like Meta and Google, who are reducing their workforce.
