Imphal, 13th June 2023: Last night, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met behind closed doors with several Kuki tribal elders and rebel factions under Suspension Of Operations in Guwahati.
According to sources, the closed-door conference in Assam’s Guwahati is part of the government’s efforts to resolve the Manipur problem as soon as possible.
Leaders of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF) met with Sarma and reviewed the current situation in Manipur, which has been racked by violence since last month, reports added.
The KNO and UPF are umbrella organisations for various Kuki militant organisations placed on Suspension of Operations (SOO) by the Centre and the Manipur government. Various parties have claimed that Kuki militants were involved in the recent spate of violence in Manipur.
According to a source close to the Assam Chief Minister, the Assam Chief Minister plans to visit Manipur’s tribal-dominated districts of Kangpokpi and Churachandpur to meet with civil society organisations and senior tribal leaders.
This is part of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to Manipur on June 10, where he met with his Manipur counterpart, N Biren Singh, in Imphal. Several ministers, MLAs, and organisations, including the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), attended the conference to discuss the violence in Manipur, which has killed over 105 people and injured over 300 more.
