New Delhi : When asked whether the Congress would face dissent from within its ranks while choosing its chief ministerial candidates in the states, Rahul Gandhi said,” It will be done smoothly.”

Congress president Rahul Gandhi called his party’s formidable performance in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh a victory of his party’s worker and of farmers, shopkeepers and small business owners. Gandhi said that it is now time for “change” in these states and that the party will work towards that.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi will take the final call on Wednesday on who will be the chief minister in Rajasthan after taking in account the opinion of the newly elected MLAs, a senior party leader said.

Senior party leader Ashok Gehlot and Pradesh Congress Committee president Sachin Pilot are the contenders for the coveted post.

What is certain, though, is that Gandhi and the Congress are now in the driver’s seat when it comes to alliance formation. It is clear to all concerned that the Congress will be the central pillar of any non-BJP government and its decimation of the Ajit Jogi-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance in Chattisgarh will have shown smaller parties and putative rebels the danger of going off on your own in this environment. The BJP’s very success in 2014 and the years since has ensured that all parties feel that their back is to the wall.
