New Delhi (India), 18th June 2023: Non-profit corporation Prahar announced on Saturday that it has written to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) requesting that the Chinese game Undawn, which was published in the country by Chinese internet giant Tencent, be banned.
Tencent debuted the online game on June 15 through Level Infinite, its worldwide publishing arm based in Singapore and Amsterdam.
According to Prahar, the release of Undawn on June 15, the anniversary of the Galwan event, depicting military outfits and weaponry used by Chinese soldiers is “pretended and hurtful to Indian sentiments.”
Abhay Mishra, National Convenor and President, Prahar, “India needs to be watchful of the Chinese soft influence, which is being used in the recent years along with technology invasion and trade dominance. These issues become relevant during times of potential military aggression, as was witnessed during the Galwan war.”
Players in the game wear military-style uniforms and are armed with assault rifles and heavy weaponry such as the M416, AK 47, G36, and MPX. Stun bombs, decoy bombs, hand grenades, and other types of bombs are among the other armaments.
Undawn also includes weapons used by Chinese forces against Indian soldiers.
Melee weapons are a notable category of weaponry in the game. The Chinese employed infamous combination maces with spikes and sharp edges to bash our soldiers.
The letter said, “We request you take action to immediately ban this game under section 69A of the Information Technology Act, as it threatens the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state, and public order.”
Tencent had to remove all of its games and mobile apps from the country three years ago, including WeChat.
The government banned the applications in June 2020, claiming national security concerns in the midst of border tensions with India and China.
Over 300 smartphone apps have been suspended in India since then.
