Greater Noida, 27 January 2025: Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), one of India’s leading management institutions, is setting new standards in education with its innovative PGDM programs. Known for its specialized approach, BIMTECH’s PGDM-Retail Management has gained attention for integrating On-Job Training (OJT) into the curriculum, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience.

In a conversation with Ten News Network, Professor Manoj Pant, a faculty of Marketing and Retail at BIMTECH, highlighted the uniqueness and importance of the OJT program in the first year of the PGDM-Retail Management program.

“The PGDM-Retail Management program is designed to provide students with sector-specific knowledge and practical exposure,” shared Professor Pant. “The OJT component allows students to immerse themselves in retail operations by working in outlets, stores, and malls for a month. Through our partnerships with 10 to 12 leading retail brands, students get hands-on experience in the National Capital Region (NCR), understanding the nuances of the industry firsthand.”

This real-world exposure helps students apply theoretical concepts learned in class, creating a seamless transition to industry practices.

Explaining the program’s methodology, Professor Pant outlined its structured approach. “OJT bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and practical application. It conditions students for fieldwork early in the program, even before they start their internships,” he said.

Students are provided with a checklist of tasks to ensure they focus on key learning objectives during their OJT. Additionally, they gain insights from experienced retail staff, allowing them to develop a comprehensive understanding of retail operations.

Professor Pant emphasized that OJT serves as a foundation for final placements. “The program not only enhances theoretical understanding but also prepares students to excel in summer internships and final placements,” he noted. “Students interact with seasoned professionals, gaining practical insights that give them a competitive edge in the job market.”

BIMTECH collaborates with top retail companies to offer diverse opportunities for students. This year, 12 leading brands, including Reliance Mart, CaratLane, Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop, and Pantaloons, hosted students for OJT. Some students also explored mall operations through partnerships with DLF Brands.

Highlighting the rigor of the program, Professor Pant detailed the accountability measures. “Students spend 30 days at their assigned outlets, uploading timestamped photos daily on our Learning Management System (LMS) to monitor their attendance. Store managers and HR executives provide feedback, and students submit detailed reports evaluated by faculty. Finally, a viva with industry experts ensures a thorough assessment of their learning.”

Faculty members also conduct field visits to observe students’ progress and address any gaps, ensuring a well-rounded evaluation process.

BIMTECH’s PGDM-Retail Management program, with its unique OJT module, underscores the institution’s commitment to experiential learning. By blending theory with practice, BIMTECH equips students with the skills and insights needed to excel in the retail sector. With initiatives like OJT, the institute continues to redefine management education, shaping a new generation of industry-ready professionals.
