Cabinet approves Rs 1.64 lakh crore revival package for BSNL

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs 1.64-lakh crore revival package for the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The package will have three main elements – it will aim at improving the quality of BSNL services, it will be used to destress the balance sheet, and will attempt to to expand the company’s fibre reach, Vaishnaw said.

The centre also approved the merger of BSNL and BBNL. BSNL has an optical fibre cable network of over 6.83 lakh kilometre, and with the telecom company will get an additional 5.67 lakh kilometre of optical fibre which has been laid across 1.85 lakh village panchayats.
Post package, BSNL will be able to expand 4G services to raise ARPU to Rs 170-180, Minister of Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw informed.
