Ghaziabad: Organisers of Ghaziabad’s third Car-Free Day on Sunday, the Ghaziabad RWA Federation, decided to endorse a move by the Confederation of NCR RWAs to push for implementation of the odd-even formula in all satellite towns of Delhi.

This month’s car-free day was held in Indirapuram, in continuation with the RWA Federation’s effort to organise the event on the 10th of every month.

“The decision to ask the district administration to implement odd-even in the city was taken by the Confederation of NCR RWAs. Accordingly, we’ll write to the UP government very soon, demanding for it’s implementation in Ghaziabad,” said federation president T P Tyagi.

For Sunday’s event, no formal notification was issued, restricting vehicles from plying in any part of the city. Two buses each of UP state road transport corporation buses and city transporters’ federation, plied throughout the day between the Indirapuram residential complex of Aashiana Upvan and the nearest Metro station at Vaishali, to encourage residents to use public transport instead of their own vehicles. As part of the programme, traffic cops and volunteers cycled to different spots to spread the message about the benefits of using non-motorised transport.
“We have seen people drive their vehicles even on very short distances, say, to the bakery or laundry. Traffic problems in the city can be reduced to a great degree if vehicle owners walk or cycle for such short errands,” said SP (traffic) Rajesh Kumar.
Federation members said they will soon create a dedicated Ghaziabad CFD Facebook page, where they will post pictures and information on forthcoming events. The next CFD will be held in Vijay Nagar on May 10.
