Delhi, Sept 10th,2022: The Central govt has asked e-commerce giant Amazon to stop the sale of devices designed to disable seat belt alarms in cars.

This decision comes after Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has made seat belts mandatory for all passengers in a car.

The need for seat belts raised genuine concerns after former Tata Group Chairman, Cyrus Mistry died in a car crash near Mumbai and was reported to not have worn a seat belt.

Citing safety and precaution as the reason for writing to Amazon, Gadkari said “Meta clips available on Amazon are inserted in seat belt slots to bypass the alarm that typically keeps pinging when seatbelts are not in use while a car is being driven”.

He further added, “People buy these clips to evade wearing seat belts. We have sent a notice to Amazon to stop selling these”.

Gadkari on Tuesday said that the government is planning to make it mandatory for automakers to build the rear seatbelt alarm also.

Currently, it is mandatory for all vehicle manufacturers to provide seat belt reminders only for front-seat passengers.
