New Delhi, August 25, 2023: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has unveiled a captivating video showcasing the Chandrayaan-3 rover, Pragyan, rolling out onto the moon’s surface.
The video, shared in a tweet by ISRO, displays the precise moment when the rover made its descent from the lander to the lunar terrain. ISRO’s tweet read, “… and here is how the Chandrayaan-3 Rover ramped down from the Lander to the Lunar surface.”
The successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon’s surface on Wednesday marked a significant achievement, placing India in the league of nations capable of achieving lunar landings. The endeavor demonstrated India’s prowess in space exploration.
ISRO acknowledged that the moon’s surface poses unique challenges for the spacecraft, particularly unfamiliar factors like lunar dust and extreme temperature variations, which could impact the moving components of the rover.
This milestone holds particular importance as it marks India’s third attempt at landing on the lunar surface. The preceding mission, Chandrayaan-2, faced a partial failure when its lander experienced a crash landing on the moon in September 2019.
Of special significance is Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing near the moon’s South Pole, a feat unaccomplished by any other spacecraft. The challenging terrain of the moon’s South Pole, characterized by craters and deep trenches, makes this achievement particularly remarkable.
The outcomes of the Chandrayaan-3 mission are anticipated to contribute significantly to the advancement of lunar water ice knowledge. The presence of water ice on the moon holds immense potential, and the mission’s findings could have far-reaching implications for future lunar exploration and resource utilization.
India’s accomplishments in space exploration continue to garner international attention, reaffirming its position as a burgeoning force in the global space community.
