New Delhi, August 21, 2023: As the countdown to a historic lunar touchdown intensifies, the Chandrayaan-3 mission has unveiled new images of the Moon, shedding light on some of its notable craters on the far side. The recently captured images provide a visual preview of the unexplored lunar south polar region, where the Vikram lander is set to make a groundbreaking landing on Wednesday.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) revealed, “Here are the images of Lunar far side area captured by the Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera (LHDAC). This camera that assists in locating a safe landing area — without boulders or deep trenches — during the descent is developed at SAC/ISRO.”
The images, taken on the previous Saturday, showcased distinct craters on the Moon’s far side, including Hayn, Boss L, Mare Humboldtianum, and Bel’kovich. These images not only serve as a scientific insight but also play a crucial role in aiding the Vikram lander’s safe descent and landing.
The Moon’s far side refers to the hemisphere perpetually hidden from Earth’s view due to synchronous rotation in the Moon’s orbit.
Scheduled for Wednesday evening at 6:04 pm, the Vikram lander’s anticipated touch down on the Moon’s south polar region marks a significant milestone for India. If successful, India will join the ranks of the United States, Russia, and China as the fourth nation to accomplish this remarkable feat.
