CM Rekha Gupta Launches 24×7 AI-Based Command Centre for Real-Time Pollution Monitoring

New Delhi News (05/10/2026): As Delhi gears up for the winter season, when air pollution typically becomes a major concern, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a 24×7 Integrated Command and Control Centre to strengthen real-time monitoring, identify pollution sources and ensure faster enforcement across the national capital.

The technology-driven centre will use Artificial Intelligence (AI), CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking and live field inputs to detect pollution-related violations and facilitate timely action. The system is designed to monitor the entire response cycle—from identifying a pollution-related issue and analysing its possible cause to initiating corrective measures and verifying whether the situation has improved after intervention.

Construction Sites to Come Under Continuous Surveillance

Construction projects spread across more than 500 square metres and covered by CCTV surveillance will be monitored through the new system. If the technology detects a rise in pollution levels in any area, an alert will be generated for further assessment and action.

Based on the information received, authorities will be able to issue notices to builders, contractors or property owners associated with the concerned site. The AI-enabled monitoring mechanism is expected to strengthen enforcement and reduce dependence on physical inspections alone.

Pollution Hotspots to Be Monitored in Real Time

The command centre will also focus on areas identified as pollution hotspots. Officials will monitor changes in the Air Quality Index (AQI) and analyse possible reasons for any sudden deterioration in air quality.

The data generated through the system will help authorities identify potential pollution sources, assess the situation and initiate corrective action within a defined timeframe. Officials will subsequently be able to verify whether the measures taken have resulted in an improvement in air quality.

GPS Tracking of Mechanical Sweepers

Mechanical road-sweeping machines will also be integrated with a GPS-based tracking system. Their movement and deployment can be monitored from the central command centre, enabling officials to check whether the machines are operating in their designated areas.

The initiative is aimed at improving accountability in road-cleaning operations and helping authorities identify gaps or lapses in the deployment of mechanical sweepers.

‘Vayu Doots’ to Track Open Burning

Special teams known as ‘Vayu Doots’ will be deployed to monitor incidents of open burning and spread awareness among residents about activities that contribute to deteriorating air quality.

These teams will be equipped with body cameras, allowing live footage from the field to be transmitted to the central monitoring facility. This will provide officials with real-time information and enable closer supervision of ground-level enforcement.

Detection to Verification on a Single Platform

The newly launched command centre is intended to bring multiple pollution-monitoring activities under one integrated platform. Rather than merely collecting air-quality data, the system will connect pollution detection, data analysis, field-level intervention and post-action verification.

The initiative assumes significance ahead of the winter pollution season, when stagnant winds and other seasonal conditions can contribute to a sharp deterioration in Delhi’s air quality.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi had not previously had a dedicated command centre focused specifically on pollution monitoring. She also remarked that the situation in the capital could have been considerably different if similar efforts had been undertaken around a decade ago.

With the new system, the Delhi government aims to use technology, artificial intelligence and real-time surveillance to identify pollution sources more quickly, strengthen accountability and ensure that corrective action continues until the identified problem is addressed.
