New Delhi, August 1, 2023: The aftermath of the communal clash that occurred in Haryana’s Nuh yesterday has now spread to Badshahpur, located 40 km away, where a mob wreaked havoc this evening, setting fire to restaurants and vandalizing shops while chanting religious slogans.

Eyewitnesses reported that around 200 individuals armed with sticks and stones entered the area at approximately 4 pm, targeting multiple shops, including several meat shops, and setting ablaze a restaurant. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The clash had initially erupted during a religious procession in Nuh, following the circulation of an objectionable viral video. As the procession was attacked with stones, over 2,500 participants sought refuge in a nearby temple.

However, the violence escalated throughout the evening, with a mosque being torched after midnight, and numerous vehicles vandalized as unruly mobs ran amok in Nuh and neighboring Gurugram.

The tragic incident has resulted in five deaths, including two security personnel and two civilians, one of whom was a mosque cleric. The people who had sought shelter in the temple were rescued close to midnight.

In response to the escalating violence, all educational institutions in Gurugram, including schools, colleges, and coaching centers, remained closed, and board exams for Classes 10 and 12 were postponed.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar vowed to take “strict action” against the perpetrators, stating, “Today’s incident is unfortunate. I appeal to all the people to maintain peace in the state. The guilty will not be spared at any cost, and strictest action will be taken against them.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed deep concern over the communal violence and urged the people of Haryana to uphold peace and brotherhood. He tweeted, “The communal violence in Haryana’s Nuh (Mewat) is deeply troubling. After Manipur in the Northeast, now such an incident in Haryana is not a good sign… I appeal to the public in Haryana with folded hands to maintain peace and mutual brotherhood at this critical time. Together, we have to defeat the forces against peace and the politics of violence.”

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are underway to restore calm in the affected regions.
