New Delhi (India), April 24, 2023: Congress leader Randeep Surjewala announced on Sunday that his party has reached out to the Communist Party of India and has received the support of its entire cadre without any preconditions in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls. This decision was made after the Communist Party of India declared its support for Congress in the state elections.

In a press conference held in Bengaluru, Surjewala stated that the CPI had initially fielded seven candidates and planned to field more. However, after discussions with Congress, it was agreed that there would be a friendly contest on the seven seats, and on the remaining 215 seats, the entire CPI cadre would support Congress candidates without any precondition or expectation.

During the conference, Surjewala also criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the arrival of state police in Karnataka following a complaint filed by a former president of the Assam Youth Congress against IYC President Srinivas BV. He rejected Sarma’s “antics to stay in the news” and stated that the propaganda would not be entertained.

On Saturday, Assam police registered a case against Srinivas BV after a woman accused him of harassment and discrimination for the past six months. The case was filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. A team of Assam police has left for Karnataka to investigate the case and is expected to arrest Srinivas BV.
